Who am I?
I’m Emily, Founder of EmPower Health.
I have always been extremely interested in science - particularly biology and chemistry and the workings of the human body. I received a First Class Biomedical Sciences BSc (Hons) from the University of Bath, specialising in human physiology and disease. Sports and fitness are an integral part of my life, from playing first team netball and hockey in school to competing at nationwide athletics events.
An unexpected ACL rupture 9 years ago redirected my path - it left me devastated and unable to participate in team sports. Looking for the silver lining, I discovered it in my newfound love for all things solo-training: weight lifting, HIIT, road cycling, indoor spinning, and yoga to name just a few.
Now a certified Fitness Instructor, I teach multiple classes weekly at Virgin Active in London and earned 5 Instructor of the Month awards in just my first year alone - undeniably proving my ability to encourage, energise, and enthuse the people who surround me.
Back in the corporate world I delved into the Health Economics industry for quite a few years. I mastered complex economic modelling and crafted medical submissions within the rare- and ultra-rare disease space with the end goal of getting medicines approved for use in the NHS. However, the spark for EmPower Health ignited, fuelled by a mission to empower women worldwide to work with, and not against, their physiology. Beyond a female-centric focus, my goal is to enlighten everyone about the intrinsic differences in women’s biology. Understanding these differences is not just a game-changer; it is essential for every single human being as they will interact with women, be it a mother, sister, daughter, friend, or colleague. Empowering people to have the knowledge of what goes on in the female body, why it goes on, and how we can make the most of it is truly transformative.
A shocking encounter in a gym fuelled my passion further; I overheard a PT say to their female client 'You could lift this weight last week so don't give me excuses as to why you can't now’. I was quite frankly appalled at this so-called professional's lack of consideration for the menstrual cycle when training his female clients, and the all-too-common assumption that ‘women are just small men’.
At that moment, I realised: it was time to take action and make a change.
I committed to research, to read, to learn, and then most importantly, to share my knowledge of just how and why the female body is so profoundly different.
So, it is for these reasons that I created EmPower Health. I do so hope you'll join me on this empowering journey…
